Kertas Akademik Sebagai Hidangan: Satu Tanggapan.

Mempastikan kertas-kertas akademik hasil tulisan penyelidik-penyelidik dan pensyarah-pensyarah dari Malaysia senang untuk dibaca dan dirujuk mungkin satu cara dapat meningkatkan peratusan 20% untuk bahagian ini.

Pemimpin-pemimpin universiti sangat inginkan universiti mereka tertonjol dan ternama. Mereka sangat menyedari pentingnya penyelidikan dan penulisan disamping pengajaran yang berkesan. Telah begitu banyak persidangan akademik di adakan tiap tahun. Telah pelbagai jurnal akademik diterbitkan. Malah ribuan tenaga pengajar di universiti-universiti telah menamatkan penyelidikan di peringkat doktor falsafah (PhD).

Yang timbul persoalan, mengapa laporan-laporan hasil penyelidikan, kertas-kertas di persidangan dan di jurnal-jurnal akademik itu tidak boleh diperolehi secara online apabila kita mencarinya melalui injin carian internet?

Populariti nama universiti keluar dalam akhbar-akhbar dan rancangan-rancangan TV tidak mencukupi, kerana jauhnya hubungan langsung faktor populariti itu dengan ukuran kriteria penarafan universiti (walaupun populariti itu perlu untuk mendekatkan universiti dengan masyarakat). Yang lebih penting ialah kertas-kertas akademik mereka yang tersebar dan mudah dirujuk.

Jika disorot dengan lebih terperinci, isunya bukan lagi kertas-kertas tersebut telah berada di website, tetapi website mana yang segera dijumpai oleh search engine popular seperti google atau yahoo, yang begitu banyak digunakan kini.

Namun jika ia telah berada di website universitipun, tetapi jika website universiti itu sukar di layari dan terlalu perlahan atau ia tersorok jauh entah di mana-mana dalam website tersebut, tentunya matlamat memudahkan ia dijumpai tidak tercapai.

Selesaian terdekat, gunakan yang mudah, laju dan banyak digunakan orang.

Barangan yang tidak berapa baikpun jika mudah didapati akan dibeli dan diambil orang berbanding barangan baik yang tersorok dan sukar diperolehi.

Mungkin kita cuba memahami beberapa contoh di sini, dengan bertanya mengapakah penulis dan penerbit buku ini, penerbit-penerbit jurnal teknologi nuklear, jurnal industrial data (dalam bahasa Sepanyol), Technische Mechanik (dalam bahasa Jerman), pemimpin-pemimpin di universiti Sweden ini, yang ini, dan juga di Belanda ini, ini, ini dan ini telah membuat keputusan memberi harta mereka ini kepada orang lain dengan mudah? Adakah mereka tidak berperasaan, setelah penat-penat belajar mengapa harus diberi pada orang lain begitu sahaja?. Atau mereka tidak sedar, kan nanti senang sahaja pihak lain copy dan paste, tanpa perlu susah payah?

Mungkin kertas yang ditulis oleh Lawrence pada tahun 2001 ini dapat memberi gambaran lebih jelas.
